Poise Candlestick
A candlestick holder that juxtaposes fine balance & poise with raw concrete solidity and strength. As we were experimenting with self-balancing objects, we found other use cases that would benefit from such a feature. One of particular note was candles where if knocked over could case devastating damage and destruction. We knew that we wanted to keep the form factor within simple geometric shapes so that it would fit within our Objects Collection and as it turned out a simple hemisphere gave us the best weight distribution for it to become self-balancing.
Poise is a representation of the potential for movement, a visual perception of the very nature of poise and elegance, like a dancer on Pointe. Contrasted with the strength and solidarity of concrete Poise creates a unique dichotomy of material and form.
During the design development of Poise we explored a number of different candle options, the challenge was to minimise the amount of wax dripping in order to keep the candle balanced. We eventually discovered a no-drip candle from IKEA that was exactly that - no drip. In the end our concerns were proven to be baseless as even the drippiest of candles didn't affect the balance beyond an acceptable level.
